No phones. No VIP. No backstage. Just DJs and pure music! That was the mission at Brooklyn’s Refuge, and it was executed perfectly. Presented by RAWCUTS and New York’s own powerhouse DJ and producer Avision, the pop-up party brought back what the dance floor has been missing: authentic connection. No phones in the air, no staged content, just smiling faces, shared energy, and a sense of community reborn.

“We’re living in a dance community that’s dying, where people only care about being on stage and filming the next viral video,” said Victor Calderone during the night. Decades ago, people couldn’t even see the DJ. You just heard the music and danced.” That message hit home. In an age where every drop is filmed for social media, RAWCUTS: Avision & Friends reminded everyone what dance culture was truly built on PLUR (Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect), not self-promotion.
The debut edition of RAWCUTS will go down as one of the most talked-about events of the season and ironically, one that no one will see online due to the no-phone policy. Entry was seamless, and the crowd was welcoming and warm. The open-air courtyard offered plenty of space to move, complete with cozy lounge seating, two bars, and even a pop-up pizza truck serving Avision’s own signature pies, Margherita and Pecorino, plus the fan-favorite cannoli! Which quickly became the night’s unofficial dessert anthem.

Avision opened the evening with a mesmerizing set filled with underground house gems and his own productions like “In My Mind,” “Good Time,” “All Over (NYC Mix),” and his latest remix of “Alive.” His seamless transitions and innate feel for pacing proved once again why he’s a true craftsman behind the decks, igniting the crowd from the very first beat.
Next up, Victor Calderone took over, continuing the momentum with his signature deep, hypnotic sound. A legend in New York’s underground, Calderone delivered a set filled with timeless house and techno cuts, weaving in vintage tracks and even closing with an explosive Afro-inspired finale. Always authentic, he doesn’t chase trends; he sets the tone, reading the crowd effortlessly and creating a spiritual dancefloor journey every time.
Toward the end of Calderone’s set, Avision joined him for an unforgettable back-to-back session, including their massive collaboration “Chemicals.” The chemistry between them was undeniable, radiating through the crowd as dancers connected in every corner, strangers trading moves, laughter, and genuine joy. Then, to top off the night, Jivan Calderone, Victor’s son and rising talent, stepped up to the decks. It became a true family affair, three generations of DJs sharing one stage, one sound, one love for the music. A historic moment in New York dance culture. When it was over, nobody wanted it to end. I turned to Aivision, and I said Please throw another and he shook his head. “Absolutely!” he said.
Brooklyn’s Refuge NYC is quickly becoming one of the city’s most exciting new venues. Housed in a nearly 200-year-old industrial complex in Williamsburg, the space offers both indoor and outdoor areas, designed for intimacy and impeccable sound. Co-founded by John Dimatteo and Craig “Shorty” Bernabeu, who is the audio mastermind behind Nowadays’ system and Montreal’s iconic Stereo redesign, and helmed creatively by Gregory Horns (formerly of Sound Factory, The World, and The Tunnel), Refuge has quickly become a haven for true music lovers.
If you haven’t been to Refuge yet, now is the time. RAWCUTS: Avision & Friends wasn’t just another party; it was a statement and a reminder that dance music, at its core, is about human connection, not digital validation.
